As of this chilly Edmonton morning, A&B Sound hands down word of its closure of their last Alberta store, Edmonton South. Starting Saturday and ending the following Sunday, November 2nd, Edmonton will host its own WakeSale.
I know, this comes as a real shock right? Well for some, despite was has transpired, it still does. There has been some real effort to revitalize what is was left of this retail relic.
A&B Sound has proved itself a juggernaut in the past. The present is no exception. Only, instead of charging headlong into the future with growth in its wake, A&B is a group of meteors careening into the Earth at breakneck speeds. Many impacts have been felt, too many in fact, with more coming.
Generally speaking, A&B Sound has been really good to a lot of people over the years. To all those people, thank you for supporting one of the last bastions of the User-Friendly Franchises. Going are the days where salespeople are there to help you make a more informed purchase, or even care at all. Box stores are the new thing as the economy seems to be telling everybody less is more, both in quality of product and quantity, let alone quality of staff. Automated cashiers are popping up everywhere, not just in box stores like Superstore and Walmart. Even A&B was considering a vending machine for products like the Apple iPods.
Forget where we're headed, that will come soon enough. Where the heck are we now? As the American economy collapses, so do we the Canadians, as we struggle with or sibling to the South. The time when we need to invest the most, we spend the least. In the past, we'd hunker down and spend smarter, play it safe. Now in the day and age of credit, we borrow more, spend the same on less and worse.
A&B Sound is just the latest casualty of our Western Idiocracy. Will be be intelligent enough to see where our true values lie or will we continue to capitalize eachother into oblivion?
What will you do to ensure our future? Without you there is no us.
